Ron Paul: More secession movements in the U.S. please
By John-Henry Perera | September 30, 2014
ust when you thought Ron Paul was out of politics, Scotland has brought him back in.
The former Texas Republican and Libertarian poster child took a stab at bridging Scotland's recent run at independence with the seccesionist movements here in the U.S.
"Even though it ultimately failed at the ballot box, the recent campaign for Scottish independence should cheer supporters of the numerous secession movements springing up around the globe," Paul wrote on his website.
In his argument, Paul cites Californians attempt to split their state six ways. While supporters didn't get their way, Paul claims the movement is still gaining traction.
"The possibility that people will break away from an oppressive government is one of the most effective checks on the growth of government," he writes. "Devolving government into smaller units promotes economic growth."
According to Google search data, 15 states, including Texas, have entertained the idea of splitting from the Union. In 2009, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said off-handedly that he had considered secession.
"When we came into the nation in 1845, we were a republic, we were a stand-alone nation, and one of the deals was, we can leave anytime we want, so we're kind of thinking about that again," he said.
He later rejected those statements and reiterated his support for the Union.
