Kurds Halt ISIS in Syria Near Turkey
Kurdish fighters say they have managed to stop ISIS from advancing on another Syrian city. “Clashes are still underway but the ISIS advance to the east of Kobani has been halted since last night,” said Redur Xelil, the spokesman for the YPG, the main Kurdish armed group. Kobani is a largely Kurdish city, and tens of thousands of its residents have fled for Turkey. Overall, about 130,000 Kurdish refugees have entered Turkey in the last two days, prompting the country to shut down some of its border crossings. Some of the Kurds have clashed with Turkish authorities and claim they are helping ISIS launch attacks on them. Before the latest flood of refugees, nearly 1 million Syrians had come to Turkey since the start of the clashes with President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
