We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Please, I know. The Declaration of Independence is not a law. It is not a statute.
It is however the defining document of the American Revolution and has become the defining document of America.
The Preamble says it all.
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
It seems self evident that reference to "Nature's God" and a "Creator" and the "Supreme Judge of the world" does not define us as a secular state.
A few of the hundreds of lawyers working for the Department of Defense should examine that Air Force Oath of Enlistment carefully and have it adjusted to reflect The Constitution, not an Act of Congress.
