Ever since I, forty some years ago, had to research and write a paper on the history of Islam, I've always kind of gone "HUH?!!" and furrowed my brow, when I hear "Islam is a religion of peace."

Yeah, to some extent. (Aren't they all?)

But....

not sure you create what you mean to by that method. folks turn in people they wish to harm, but not necessarily the people that did something. and it turns the state into a different sort of scary thing. it was the stasi model, after all.

personally, i wonder if fundamentalist islam doesn't give the lie to the idea that we can all live together. frankly, one wonders if absorption is worth the effort. no other religion is like this one. they like to say it is a tiny proportion of muslims who become terrorists, which is true. but relative to non-muslims, islam produces a far higher percentage of terrorists per capita. why is that my problem?

i don't feel multicultural towards the thuggees or the assassins. wondering whether islam is in the same category. islam isn't a race. it's a religion and a culture. it needs to change if its adherents wish to live with other people. whatever it is about islam that turns relatively so many of them into monsters has to evolve. or cohabitation isn't worth the effort for the rest of us. because right now, wherever islam is, it is creating the same set of problems.

you can't say it is us who generate the issues. the same issues exist in nigeria, in kashmir, in china, in the philippines, in russia. and it's always islamists that seek to make life worse for everyone else.

and yet hindus, jews and buddhists also develop distinct communities and cultures without the ugly stuff.

this is sad, because islam was once a relatively tolerant religion. but it doesn't seem capable of operating as a minority. it always seems to want to impose itself. or at least, there always seem to be too many muslims who think it should.

if jihad is violence, islam won't mix. only a spiritual form of jihad is acceptable.
