IMF Chief Under Formal Investigation

Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF, has been placed under formal investigation by French magistrates for her alleged role in a political fraud case. She had originally been questioned as a witness in the inquiry into Bernard Tapie that has affected several members of former President Nicolas Sarkozyâ€™s cabinet. Lagarde reportedly considers their decision to investigate her for â€œnegligenceâ€ unfounded and will appeal. The issue involves Tapie receiving 403 million euros in an arbitration payment during Sarkozyâ€™s presidency while Lagarde was finance minister. Tapie was a big Sarkozy supporter.
