First Woman Gets Top Science Medal
Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian mathematician working in the U.S., has become the first female to win the Fields Medal. The honor is seen as being the Nobel Prize for math, and is awarded by the International Mathematical Union every four years. Mirzakhani was awarded the medal for her work in complex geometry. The other two medals given this year went to a Brazilian, Artur Avila, and a Canadian-American, Manjul Bhargava.
