Obama Polls Poorly on Border Crisis; GOP House Fares Even Worse

In the first test of the public’s response to the border crisis, a Washington Post/ABC News poll found that both President Barack Obama and the Republican Congress got low marks across the board for their handling of over 50,000 migrant children from Central America apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border.
58% disapproved of Obama’s handling of the situation — including 54% of Hispanics, and 60% of independent voters — while a scant 33% approved.
Those numbers were worse for congressional Republicans, with 66% disapproving and a meager 23% approving. Republicans fared worse among independent voters, and only barely maintained a plurality of support from among Republicans voters.
53% support Obama’s additional funding request of $3.7 billion,
a request that has gotten resistance from Republicans in Congress who fear extra funding allocations without guarantees that the rise in Central American immigrants fleeing violence in their home country will stem.
The poll did not ask about a related proposal to amend a 2008 law to allow Central American immigrants to undergo an expedited deportation process, something the sponsoring lawmakers say will ease the bottleneck at the border. Nor did the poll test how the public felt about Obama not visiting the border, which must be a drag to cable pundits.
