60 mph is 88 feet per second! Not to be trifled with. 68.5 mph takes it to 100,5 feet per second, a third of a football field every second... Reaction time does make a difference, as long as you can see that far out...
When I was in college for my first two years all I had was a motorcycle and in northern Michigan we have lots of deer. One time I just missed hitting a deer by about 10 feet and while that may sound like a lot, at 60 mph on a motorcycle, 10 feet will scare the living crap out of you.
