Smallpox virus found on NIH campus

Vials of the deadly virus that causes smallpox were found in an unused part of a laboratory storage room at the National Institutes of Health, the CDC said today.
The lab was not equipped or authorized to handle the vials, which apparently date from the 1950s, according to a CDC statement. Although on the NIH property, the facility has been operated by the Food and Drug Administration since 1972. Scientists made their discovery July 1 while readying for the lab’s move from Bethesda to the FDA campus in Silver Spring.
