there is no such thing as America.
There are many fake nations, lines drawn on maps by others, places often full of war and chaos as a result.
There are many real nations, places where lines fall naturally as a consequence of people bonded by language, tradition, often faith, but ultimately a common sense of something indescribable as in "I am British" or "I am German".
America is neither of those. There is really no such thing as the Nation "America" (or the United States).
Will and others wish there was, so they point with futility to things like baseball.
The truth is these United States are that, states united largely for military and economic purposes, but they/we/I are not a people - not in the German, French, or English sense.
The consequences of this lack of real nation are beyond my capacity to articulate. But it is the thing, the one thing that makes it what it is, what makes America a great nation is that it is not a nation at all. With all of that might, invention, and brave history it, I, you, and everybody else are saved by the fact that that great nation is not a nation at all.
