I only use iPhoto as a 'gateway' to download images from our various cameras/iPhones but I don't use it to store or organize anything other then into the dated 'events' which represents the downloads. I export everything and the images are then 'cleaned-up' (I discard pure duplicates and anything which doesn't meet quality guidelines), numbered and cataloged using a FileMaker Pro database, in which each record includes, in addition to a 'thumbnail' image, the type of image (Slide, Negative or Digital), a description of the image's subject, a set of keywords for searching (names of people, places, event, subject, etc.), the date (Month and Year) taken, the camera used, etc. I then collect them into CD-ROM sized folders (left-over from the days when I kept CD-ROM hard copies) and then burn DVD-ROM's, each containing six CD-ROM sized folders. I burn two copies, one I keep in my safe at home and the second copy in a file cabinet at my office. I also have all the images on a 2TB external hard drive for immediate access when needed.

OCU - All different?
I have so many duplications, from various backups or regroupings, plus the way iPhoto stores, indexes images in the 30 or 40 libraries, I can't put a number on how many photos, much less how many are my own, how many are scans of old images or finds from local library archives...
Picasa shows I have near 17,967 Folders, with 207,507 images... I've identified 339 faces in Picasa, but there's still 110,680 Unnamed faces waiting to be sorted out... Picasa has been very handy to find a variety of grandkids or other folks... Makes a nice collage for a birthday, anniversary..
Hmm, my Pictures Folder, which includes all the above, is 196.24 Gb for 85,728 items. But it's hard to tell whether the iPhoto files are broken down in there..
It's a bunch, in any case... backed up, cloned, some in the various online accounts... Trick is finding the ine that comes to mind, but it generally works out..
Way more than I'd ever have done with film...
