Long documents. Please share the quotes and the references. The way it looks to me on a cursory review is that once again you are looking at operational recommendations and actual flight plans rather than aircraft capabilities. But I may have missed the reference.

As regards my post, sorry to say, it wasn't a shill blogger's website that explains mach numbers.

Per wikipedia, here's what NASA says about Mach Numbers:

"An aircraft traveling at Mach 1 at 20°C or 68°F, at sea level, will experience shock waves in much the same manner as when it is traveling at Mach 1 at 11,000 m (36,000 ft) at −50°C or −58F, even though it is traveling at only 86% of its speed at higher temperature like 20°C or 68°F."

Hi Alea....

http://www.tc.faa.gov/its/worldpac/techrpt/ar06-11.pdf

http://www.tc.faa.gov/its/worldpac/techrpt/ar04-44.pdf

If you care to look at offical FAA & Boeing
government data instead of a shill blogger's
website you will see that Maximum Mach number
is dependent on ALTITUDE....at least the FAA &
Boeing Understand Air Density!

The Maximum Mach of 0.86-0.92 is for 35,000 ft
The Maximum Mach at sea level is 0.50-0.55
dependent on the commercial Aircraft!

For instance a 747 has a maximum mach of 0.92
at 35,000 ft & maximum mach of 0.55 at ground
level.......A 777 has a maximum mach of 0.86
at 35,000ft and maximum mach of 0.5 at sealevel.
