obama is a political calculator and gradualist rather than an unswerving idealist.

so i also think he'd have voted yes to the iraq war as a senator.

it was his good fortune not to have done so as he wasn't a senator at the time.

he's not the kind of guy who will stand up as the one or two in a hundred without regard to his own ambition.

sometimes pragmatism is a useful quality. but folks who are political or pragmatic to the point of seeming unprincipled have a problem.

OBL was in Pakistan.

Hi Cactus Flower,

Here's my take on Obama's Afghanistan;

He wasn't a senator at the time of the Iraq war vote.
He said he was opposed, I believe him.
However, I also think if he was in the senate he would have voted for it, purely for political reasons & because at that time there were very few in congress with the courage to vote no. In doing so they were accused of being unpatriotic & soft on terrorism....
If you look at Obama's voting record in congress, he had more 'present votes' than committed votes.

Okay, so in order for Obama to be opposed to Iraq without being soft on terrorism, he made Afghanistan the 'correct war.'
Instead of winding down he doubled down.
And that was 'his' critical error IMO.

We should have started leaving there once Obama got bin Laden & we should have said our job was done....
I dream too~~~
