I left with the notion that democracy is about the "maximum" good for the most people.

...wrong on learned one. Democracy is about everybody having a voice. Even the folks with whom you disagree. A constitutional republic on the other hand is what we live in. You don't get a say in everything but you do get a representative who votes for you. The constitution is what protects the rights of the minority from the majority. For example, slavery is illegal even if a majority of the people like it. Stealing other peoples wealth is illegal even if you vote for it.

Learning to accede to, accept and acquiesce to the will of the majority is of course a factor.

...going along to get along is part of the maturing process. Cooperation is part of living in a civilized society. On the other hand ya don't have to like it and there is nothing wrong with working to change those things with which you disagree.

Liberals are like a "Slinky". Totally useless, but somehow ya can't help but smile when you see one tumble down a flight of stairs!

Good Evening!!

I went to college at one of those "liberal" New York schools so of course I got an extra heavy dose of
Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill
Innocent child that I was I left with the notion that democracy is about the "maximum" good for the most people.

Learning to accede to, accept and acquiesce to the will of the majority is of course a factor.

I don't hate what I don't agree with.
My freedom and liberty is based on the freedom and liberty of others.
