If I recall correctly, Nidal Malik Hasan was an MD (Medical Doctor) and as such, would have entered the service with the rank of Captain. So being promoted to Major was not all that much of a stretch.

...Nidal Malik Hasan (ft hood shooter) was a major. Getting a promotion in the army doesn't require very much in some units. When I was in the military ya had to bust your ass for four years to make corporal. Now all ya got to do is not get drunk and vomit on the IG's uniform when he comes to inspect.

...yep, what happens next should be determined by the army, but not the commander in chief. The big guy should remain above this kind of stuff.
