The central means of Buddhism are explained in the first teaching the Buddha gave just after his awakening when he spoke of finding “the middle path”, or “the middle way.” He had tried paths of self indulgence and self denial and found that they only led to dukha, or worldly pain and suffering. Once he changed course and began following a middle path, he awakened to reality. By avoiding these two extremes, the Buddha has gained knowledge of the midle path which gives insight and wisdom, and leads to calm, to vision, to awakening, to nirvana.
