Actually that news item is not quite accurate. The press misunderstood what Siemens' CEO Joe Kaeser said. While the number being quoted is accurate, at least as far as it goes, but to say that 11,600 will lose their jobs was incorrect.

The real situation is that Siemens is restructuring into three main industry thrusts, Electrification, Automation and Digitization. They're going to sell off some underperforming units, like their hearing aid business and postal sorting machines, and they're going to spin-off their medical diagnostic and scanning business into a separate company that they may either IPO out or sell to a group of investors. As for their transportation business (high-speed and interurban locomotives) they plan on offering the French government a swap for that business for Alstom's non-nuclear energy businesses (steam/gas turbines, and wind turbines). The 11,600 are the number of people who will be directly impacted by these changes, but not necessarily losing their jobs, however they could be asked to move from one business unit to another or perhaps even change their jobs altogether. Granted, some of the 11,600 will be people who will end up without a job but the final number could be much smaller than what's being reported depending on exactly how all of this pans out, particularly if the Alstom deal fails to materialize or not.

As for my own situation, our 'company', Siemens PLM Software, is going to be the core of the new 'Digitization' business unit. In fact, not only is our organization going to remain intact, the corporation is going to transfer at least 2 other Siemens software product divisions into our company so in the end, we're going to go from about 8,200 employees worldwide to nearly 11,000. This will make-up about 1/2 of the total 'Digitization' business unit. Considering that my plans are to retire in a year and half or whereabouts, I doubt that anything at this point is going have much of an impact on my job or position.
