on the other hand, my criticism of arsenal away against the top teams is that it was recklessly aggressive. pendulum at the other extreme.

but my favourite game of the season was undoubtedly the 6-3 loss to man city. it was a fabulous, open and entertaining game. it might easily have been 10-6 to man city.

results and entertainment aren't the same thing.

hi doma,

no. you are clearly struggling with the difference between chelsea adopting defensive tactics against top teams and a different set of tactics against weaker teams.

the different tactics result in different outcomes. the average for the two combined is clearly going to be impacted by both sets of averages.

relative to the other top teams, chelsea away games in total are also relatively dull. fewer goals by a country mile. so again, not entertaining.

i suspect that the reason you won't acknowledge that chelsea adopts negative tactics in away games against the top tier and saw about 1 goal/game is that it is an inconvenient truth. you want chelsea not only to be effective but also entertaining.

unfortunately, the figures demonstrate the risk-averse tactics i highlighted.

obviously, chelsea's goalkeeper acknowledged use of negative tactics in the liverpool chelsea game. so the numbers support the comments which support the theory. it's a grimly effective model that looks like taking third place for chelsea. same place as last year, but benitez played football that was more fun to watch.

folks used to say my team were boring in the 1980s and early 1990s. they were right.

this season, chelsea is the boring one when away to the top teams.
