Sometimes we just get lucky... I borrowed a Celestron 1200mm scope and hooked my D90 on the back of it. I got quite a shock as you will see here.

Note that Mars was also very bright last night being that it's on one of it's closest approaches to Earth in years. The image below was taken with the same Sony A65/400mm set-up during the period when the Moon was at it's maximum collusion. Now this is not a full frame image but was cropped at maximum pixel size (the Sony A65 is a 24 MP camera). And before anyone thinks that the bright area near the top right on the image might be the polar ice caps, I sort of doubt it. I suspect that it's a lens artifact, perhaps a little spherical aberration. But no matter what, it's still a pretty good shot and at least it shows why it's called the 'Red Planet':
