They are the party of pretend. The GOP.
They pretend that tax cuts are always good and pay for themselves.
They pretend that Obama is responsible the structural deficits that he actually inherited from Bush's utter fiasco of a presidency. You, know, the unfunded tax cuts, the unfunded wars, the unfunded Medicare part D, the cratering of the economy -- somehow that's all instantly Obama's fault on Jan 1 2009.
They pretend that voter fraud is a real problem, and they pretend that voter ID laws and restricted voting hours, etc. are able to combat the kinds of voter fraud that actually happens, and they pretend they are actually intended to combat it (rather than discouraging THOSE PEOPLE from voting).
They pretend that global warming is not happening, or if it's happening, it's some how NOT because of stupendous increases in GREENHOUSE GASES that is causing it, or if CO2 is causing it, it would trash the economy to try to do anything about it (note to Germany and China).
They pretend that zygotes are people even though there is no reasonable scientific, philosophical or religious basis for this position. (Extra credit, if you believe there is a religious basis for, show me that in the bible. And why we should ignore the parts that imply the soul is invested by the breath of life. And also explain why God designed women's bodies to kill one third of all "people" by mistake through spontaneous abortions. That's a pretty massive product design oopsy! Why doesn't faulty product design make God the biggest mass murderer of all time? That and the flood.)
Pretend that they can and will repeal the ACA. Pretend that gays have some pernicious agenda and treating them like people would be bad for America. Pretend guns make us safer. Pretend most people dependent on the government are urban blacks (not rural white). Pretend that despite 7% unemployment, people who are unemployed are lazy. Pretend that increasing marginal tax rates by a few percent will discourage "producers" from working. Pretend that wholesale violation of the plain spirit of tax laws is a morally justifiable position. Pretend that unlimited campaign contributions from rich people does not corrupt; and the reason why Sheldon Adelson can crook his finger and have all the Republican candidate instantly come running to Vegas is NOT because he expects anything at all in return.
Pretend, pretend, pretend, pretend. On virtually every major issue of the day, that's all modern right does. And why they do it is simple: Their world view and ideology, which serves as the foundation of their current political power, is plainly preposterous BS, and so pretending for benefit their army of conservative dupes (so nicely illustrated by the conservatives on this board) is really the only choice they have.
