There was also a cost when automakers had to put pollution controls on their cars and switch to unleaded gas. And before you suggest that this too was a waste of time and money, in the late 70's Los Angeles averaged 200+ smog alert days per year. When we moved to SoCal 33+ years ago there were still a hundred or so 1st and 2nd stage smog alerts each year and a dozen or so 3rd stage ones where they would close schools and businesses would tell employees to stay home. Well we haven't had anything close to that in years. In fact I can't recall the last 3rd stage alert that we've had and can count on one hand the number of 1st and 2nd stage alerts in the past 5 years. And most of this improvement in those last 45 years was since automobile pollutions standards were put into place, and while the number of cars on the road in SoCal has increased tremendously, the number of pre-pollution control autos on the streets have been reduced to virtually zero with only a few 'classics' being driven around on weekends to car shows and 'cruises' down Sunset Boulevard. While we still have more pollution than we would like to have (by the end of summer there's still a bit of a 'bath-tube ring' around the LA basin), we have seen, and the operative word here is SEEN, a tremendous improvement in air quality. When we moved here in 1980 it was 6 months before I realized that there was a mountain range visible on my drive to work. Now I see those mountains virtually EVERY DAY! Sure cars in California cost more than they do in other states and gas prices are higher here and we pay gas taxes and high license fees with much of that money earmarked for air quality programs but they do work and most of us who have been here since the 'bad old days' are willing to accept that as the price for the improvements that we've seen and that we hope we will continue to see improvements made.

THE HIGH COST OF RENEWABLE-ELECTRICITY MANDATES

http://www.manhattan-institute.org/html/eper_10.htm

Zim:
To simplify what this site is saying, is that some
States, like California, have mandated a large
percentage of their electricity come from 'renewables'.
And, those States are suffering from much higher
electricity costs because of it.

In one place on the site, they list the places with
the most expensive electricity . . and the cheapest.

Most expensive was Hawaii - at 28 cents per Kwatt Hr.
New York came in at 18.74 and Californica at 14.75.

Least expensive was Idaho at 8 cents per Kwatt Hr.

Now, if you was gonna build a factory which needed
a LOT of electricity . . would you build it in
New York? Or Idaho.

Zim.
