well, what do you expect? if you behave like a twit, you get treated like one.

northumbria is an english region. in a feudal architecture, the earl of northumbria had to pay homage to an english king. the king of scotland could not. so of course he had to accept the loss of the earldom.

instead he rebelled against henry ii over an english possession and paid the price. henry obviously couldn't accept the annexation of northumbria. and he had the force to protect his domain.

but of course, by rebelling, william revealed his character and intentions. faced with a neighbour who was likely to invade if given the chance, henry restricted his ability to do so.

scotland was a pugnacious neighbour during this period. in this case, william carefully placed scotland under henry's heal. genius.

I start with King David 1st through to William 3rd...

Scotland has been under the heal of England for
near on 1000 years....when you occupy & conquer
weak countries their bloodlines are erased from
history.....After 500 years there's not much
Scottish left........

"William was grandson of David I of Scotland. He also inherited the title of Earl of Northumbria in 1152 from his father, Henry of Scotland. However he had to give up this title to King Henry II of England in 1157. This caused trouble after William became king, since he spent a lot of effort trying to regain Northumbria.
William was a key player in the Revolt of 1173–1174 against Henry II. In 1174, at the Battle of Alnwick, during a raid in support of the revolt, William recklessly charged the English troops himself, shouting, "Now we shall see which of us are good knights!" He was unhorsed and captured by Henry's troops led by Ranulf de Glanvill and taken in chains to Newcastle, then Northampton, and then transferred to Falaise in Normandy. Henry then sent an army to Scotland and occupied it. As ransom and to regain his kingdom, William had to acknowledge Henry as his feudal superior and agree to pay for the cost of the English army's occupation of Scotland by taxing the Scots."
