And a similar story can be told about how what is now Kuwait was carved out of what was then the Ottoman Empire, only in this case it was a British foreign service officer using a grease-pencil on a map of the Middle-East right after WWI in response to an outrage that resulted from some incident with the various Arab 'leaders' in the region. And we all know the problems which this eventually led to...

BTW, Russia annexing Crimea should make Ukraine more pro-western by subtracting the pro-Russian Crimean population.

Crimea was part of Russia for centuries. It was gifted to Ukraine in 1954 by decree of Soviet leader, Nikita Kruschev, but remained part of the Soviet Union, so it was an internal redistribution.
