Second theory

Something disastrous happened in the cockpit.

The plane was being diverted by the pilots after it happened.

The pilots were overwhelmed by fumes/smoke.

The plane kept on flying on autopilot on a course from malaysia straight to the maldives until it ran out of fuel.

Plane seen in Maldives.

So it was headed for Africa/ME. Somalia sounds most likely destination. Given the degree of planning, one can hardly doubt that an organisation is involved. Must have had a refuelling stop planned, perhaps on a remote island airfield.
