Where I went to college, it's basically on the shores of Lake Superior and one year while I was there it nearly froze over. And when it did, the snow stopped and it got much colder very quickly. After all, that surface water can't get any lower than 32° and while that may sound cold, it's a lot better then below zeros temps.
BTW, the water temperature of Lake Superior doesn't get all that much higher than 32° in some places during the Summer. Along the 'southern' shore in the early Fall, perhaps up to 45°. Still damn cold if you wanted to go swimming. There are very few 'sandy beaches' along the lake, not for a lack a sand, but for a lack of someone thinking that they actually needed a 'beach'.
