Yeah. At the time, we just called it the School of Mines.

I went to school during the day and worked underground at night. I was a "contract miner".

3 days after I quit, the stope we were working caved in - and one of my former partners had his back broken. Coulda been me.

At the university there in Butte?

We've stopped by their mineral museum, which of course has a great display with respect to Copper ores and such. They even had a nice size chunk of 'float Copper' from the area near my school in Upper Michigan.

BTW, 'float Copper' is pure and needs no chemical extraction. You simply crush it to separate it from the calcite and then melt it and pour it into ingot molds. When they paved the streets in town and around the campus they used to use the 'tailings' from the old stamping mills as aggregate and there was always some bits of Copper which would end-up in the pavement. And when the sun came out after a rain, when walking across the street, you could see these flakes of Copper reflecting the sun light, which looked really cool. My roommate my freshman year was from a place in Minnesota where they used to have an old Gold mine and the city used to do the same thing with the tailings from it and so instead of flakes of Copper they had flakes of Gold in their streets. In fact, he claimed the that 'Ripley's Believe It or Not' wrote them up once as being a city where indeed "the streets were paved with Gold".

Also, at the university, we stopped by their seismology lab where they've been tasked with keeping an eye on Yellowstone and the surrounding area. We talked to some of the people who worked there and they explained about how Yellowstone is another Krakatoa just waiting to blow.
