the interesting thing about the snowden case is that it exposes the crumbling of the two key pillars of western governance: personal freedom (including the presumption of a right to privacy); and the rule of law (by which sovereign representatives are held accountable to the law in the same way as everyone else is).
1. snowden revealed that universal surveillance has been secreted into the marketplace sneakily and at the expense of everyone's privacy.
2. in consequence, snowden has been pursued as a criminal, whereas the folks from previous administrations, who created and concealed these hideous programmes, smile and go fishing.
and yet in revealing them, snowden has finally set the debate, and the law, in motion. and those who operated in the dark and who confused their omerta with righteousness are now exposed.
what a wonderful thing sunlight is.
and snowden is its author.
