...when someone says, 'according to a report' it is as vague a sourcing as if they said, 'everybody knows' or 'leading scientists everywhere agree'. It is an attempt to make a rumor sound official. Everybody does it except for me. Leading scientist everywhere have a report that everybody knows about and it agrees that I never do that sort of thing.

ribit,

try to keep up.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called his counterpart in New York to complain about a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey appointee's handling of the flap over lane closures at the George Washington Bridge, according to a report.

Citing a source familiar with the call, the Wall Street Journal said Christie called New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to tell him that PA Executive Director Patrick Foye was pushing too hard to uncover the truth behind the lane closings, which have been the subject of hearings by the Assembly Transportation Committee. Foye was appointed by Cuomo.

Cuomo and Christie share authority over the massive bi-state agency.
The Port Authority's ranking member from New Jersey, Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni told the committee members that the study had been ordered by Port Authority employee David Wildstein. Wildstein resigned his position last week, effective January 1. The study was done in order to gauge the impact of diverting lanes currently restricted for local use by Fort Lee residents, Baroni told the committee.

But earlier this week, Foye said he had no prior knowledge of the study and shut it down when he realized the extent of the traffic backup in Fort Lee. Other PA employees said Wildstein ordered the lane closures but advised them not to tell anyone it was happening.

Foye praised Baroni's work at the PA, but said the incident was mishandled and would have resulted in Wildstein's firing had he been a New York appointee.

Transportation Committee Chairman John Wisniewski this week called for Baroni to resign and said he has outlived his usefulness at the Port Authority.

Baroni's testimony, which was voluntary and not under oath, did not jibe with that of the three port officials who testified this week, Wisniewski said.

Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak did not return a call for comment on the discussion between the two governor's, however, a spokesman for the governor told the Wall Street Journal that Christie and Cuomo speak "on any number of mutual-interest topics. Those conversations are private."
