If you want to read about the career of someone who loved and encouraged war and who was involved in the build up to WW1, this guy is the charm: Basil Zaharoff.

I know about him from the encyclopedia of wisdom aka The Adventures of Tintin. He appears in The Broken Ear as Basil Bazarov.
