Seven Billion-Dollar Storms in '13

Mother nature caused some seriously expensive damage to the U.S. last year. According to a report from the National Climactic Data Center (NCDC), despite the fact that tornado activity was below average in 2013, seven extreme weather and climate-related events each caused more than $1 billion in damage. From tornadoes alone there were 54 fatalities. The country also experienced its 20th warmest winter on record and tied for its 15th warmest summer. Overall, the year’s annual temperature was 0.3°F above the 20th century average.
