Despite the five years of austerity, Ireland has not seen the unrest of Greece and Spain. The small nation is proof that the discipline of tax hikes and spending cuts can work.
Irish debt yields have dropped to about 3.5 percent and the budget deficit has fallen to an estimated 7.3 percent in 2013, down from almost a third of the GDP three years ago. Although they still have the highest deficit-to-GDP ratio in the EU, the economy is growing. Hopes are that it will have a growth rate of 3 percent and sustain the national debt.
