... required auto insurance is liability insurance to cover the harm you might do others. If your car is 'financed' ya might have to provide other insurance as required by the financier. That portion is not required by the government. Further, if you do not own a car you do not need auto insurance and therefore not required to buy it. Also, if you do not drive on public roads you do not have to have a drivers license or insurance. There are more things about auto insurance and health insurance that are different than there are that are the same.

Yeah.
Especially when they are implemented at the federal
level.

With auto insurance - note that it is States that
mandate it. Not the federal. And, if there was
something fundamentally wrong with mandated car
insurance . . . we do have the Supreme Court to
strike it down.

Medicaid and medicare both should be ran at (and funded by)
the States. (I don't want them outlawed so much as
I'd like to see them paid and monitored by the State
and local governments - smaller pots for the thieves
to steal from and those paying for them will, hopefully,
keep a closer eye on it.)
