Black smoke seen 15 miles from accident in Casselton, near Fargo.
Breaking News

A freight train derailed and caught fire Monday afternoon in North Dakota, filling the sky with black smoke that could be seen for miles.

KVLY-TV reported that several cars of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train had derailed about a mile west of Casselton, near Fargo, and that at least one car carrying bulk oil was burning. Cass County Emergency Manager Dave Rogness told the Associated Press that emergency crews said

up to a dozen rail cars carrying ethanol or oil had derailed.

Residents within a two-mile radius were warned to stay inside. One resident about a half-mile away told KVLY she could see large flames. Smoke could be seen 15 miles away, Inforum reported.

The derailment was reported about 2:30 p.m. CT (4:30 p.m. ET).

Casselton, population 2,300, is the hometown of the state's current governor, Jack Dalrymple, and four predecessors.
