Hi Alea....

Strange then that 2000 years earlier in Archimedes
treatise "Measurement of a circle" the opening
statement is....

"The area of any circle is equal to a right-angled triangle in which one of the sides about the right angle is equal to the radius, and the other to the circumference, of the circle."

17th century my assSmile

hi doma,

no. i am pointing out the definition and not the latin word.

you were making a point that depended upon a particular definition of the word radius.

that definition is modern and not ancient. there is no connection between the radius of a circle (the modern definition of the word radius) and the ancient god ra.

the geometric meaning of the latin word radius belongs to the seventeenth century.

that's what the etymological dictionary says.

so taking the ancient word and applying significance to it based on a modern definition is ahistorical.

if you had said ra has a connection with the latin word meaning ray of light, i would have answered differently. i would have said, perhaps but i don't know.

but instead you claimed there was significance in the connection between ra (ra-dius) and half the width of a circle. there clearly is not. the scientists who came up with the meaning of the word radius did so in the seventeenth century ad. thus there is only radius, not ra-dius and there is no link here between egyptian worship and geometry by the pathway you have defined.

same with electricity.
