While reading an engineering trade journal today I came a across this interesting statistic.
Did you know that something like 50% of the nuclear fuel currently powering America's commercial reactors was produced from material removed from dismantled Russian atomic weapons? This was part of the disarmament agreement that we have with the Russians, that we, and I assume other countries in the West as well, will guarantee the purchase of a significant portion of the recovered fissionable material but it will be reprocessed and used ONLY in commercial reactors to generate power for the civilian market. If this material is in our nuclear plants it's NOT being sold to terrorists nor being transferred to other countries for use in their own nuclear weapons programs.
