Aurora Health Care and UW Health announced Wednesday that they were in talks to explore how the two health systems could work together.
UW Health is the brand name for UW Hospital and Clinics and the UW Medical Foundation, the clinical practice of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Those two entities own Unity Health Insurance.
Michael Brophy, chief communications officer and chief of staff at Aurora, said the two health systems are looking at an array of areas in which they could collaborate.
"We are not ruling anything out," Brophy said. "But because we have just begun the conversation, we don't have anything definitive."
It was premature, he said, to talk about the two systems' merging.
"We are not going to predict where these talks are going to lead," Brophy said. "It's too early for that."
Aurora is the state's largest health care system.
