Republicans were out to damage or kill Obamacare and to ensure their constituency either profited from or were not damaged by the new law. Compromising with Republicans accomplished one or more of those goals. They were pretty unanimous, despite some of their public statements, in their opposition. Many of us believe Obamacare is a half-ass program, 100% ill-advised, advanced in a time and place unsuited to its creation (The Great Recession) - a complete opposite of Massachusetts MassHealth program which was formulated with bi-partisan support (some grudgingly) in a prosperous state having more than adequate medical facilities, during prosperous times, with generous federal subsidies, serving a stable population, the vast majority of whom were already insured. And still MassHealth is in some financial distress.
