Actually it was a Republican name 'Eisenhower' who first sent US troops into Vietnam. Granted, it was Johnson who ramped-up the war to the levels that it eventually reached, but US troops had been there for years before Kennedy was elected and before Johnson assumed office when Kennedy was assassinated:
