Milwaukee teen pregnancy rate drops 50% in 7 years after city efforts
Milwaukee's teen birth rate has dropped by 50% over the past seven years - surpassing by three years and 4 percentage points a goal set by one of the nation's most ambitious teen pregnancy prevention initiatives, city officials announced Wednesday. | 11:30 a.m.

Significant declines were recorded for every racial and ethnic group over the past seven years.
Compared to 2006 — the first year that the initiative counted — the birth rate for Hispanics dropped by 56%; 55% for non-Hispanic blacks; and 47% for non-Hispanic whites, public health officials said.
The recently adopted MPS human growth and development curriculum — and the community awareness campaign — focus on two ways to prevent pregnancy: abstain from or delay sexual intercourse; or use contraception correctly every time.
Other cities around the country are seeing declining teen birth rates, but Milwaukee's rate is decreasing faster, according to officials who lauded the city's 50% drop over seven years.
