The Justice Department will sue North Carolina over the state's new voter ID law, a person familiar with the planned lawsuit told POLITICO.
DOJ will charge that the law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls violates the Voting Rights Act by discriminating against African Americans. The suit will also demand that all changes to North Carolina voting laws, procedures and polling places be "precleared" by DOJ or a federal court.
Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to announce the lawsuit at 11 a.m. Monday morning.
