Hi clo,

The large scale thing that Reagan/Thatcher/Gorbachev did is end the cold war. Eastern Europe is free because of it. That's a big deal.

Re global spying - yes. Sometimes exceptionalism is a bad thing when seen by others.

To dig,

Yes, R/T/G stood on the shoulders of others. And yes, internal forces.

But even so, we tend to give credit to the folks in power. Especially as R/T/G were in power for some time before the wall came down.

Reagan, oh yes, lets remember what he did.
The Iran–Contra affair, selling arms to Iran...
He's lucky he wasn't impeached.

I've never understood how republicans took to Reagan, the Hollywood B-actor.

Reagan's 'Star Wars' made the USSR go broke. That's the reason the cold war melted.

The Congress won't close Gitmo. They don't think those held could be held in our prisons. Foolish, we have some strong prisons.

Many Americans prefer drones to troops being at risk.
And truth be told, many don't mind the global spying, part of our 'exceptionalism' in a weird way.

Listen, I always believed Obama wasn't ready for the job. He made a few good speeches and Hillary voted to go to war based on the phony info being feed to the Congress.
He's doing the best he can under the circumstances.
