Obama Asks Congress to Postpone a Vote on Syria Action While Diplomacy Is Pursued
President Obama, facing an almost certain defeat in obtaining Congressional support for a military strike against Syria, made the case for that strike to the nation Tuesday night, but said he would give serious consideration to a proposal by Russia that international monitors take over and destroy Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons.
In a televised address, the president said he asked Congress to delay action on authorizing military action in Syria while diplomatic efforts were pursued.
Describing the sort of military campaign he would pursue, President Obama said, “I will not put American boots on the ground in Syria. I will not pursue an open-ended action like Iraq or Afghanistan. I will not pursue a prolonged air campaign like Libya or Kosovo. This would be a targeted strike to achieve a clear objective: deterring the use of chemical weapons and degrading Assad’s capabilities.”
