There are many ways to cause harm to Assad without entering the fight directly.

eg set up and arm a secular rebel army.

Killing Assad risks empowering the Al Qaeda rebels. We really don't want these rebels to win.

Bombing his palaces surely achieves nothing.

There's really no worthwhile outcome using missiles.

The Iranian angle was introduced by the administration to gain purchase. It's fairly irrelevant. Iran has a new administration with whom the US should hope to negotiate given time and patience.

Again, just because Obama bluffed doesn't mean there's a viable response. There really isn't. This isn't about the USA and its President. He needs to swallow his own mistake.

Bad luck if he made a mess for himself. The resolution isn't to go and do something pointless.

Hi CF, busy pressure washing. First this is a civil war that I want no part of. But use of WMD must be responded to. It doesn't have to be missiles. Take out Assad w/ a drone or a sniper or a bunker buster - just blow up a couple of his palaces, I don't care. BO must back up his threats if compromise isn't available. Then let the civil war continue w/ the US out of it other than diplomaticly. BO's legacy will be that of a weak bluffer. All talk no action. Take no action and Iran will be nuking people in a few short years and a new Republican President will have us in a real cluster conflict. Anyway, for now diplomancy still has a chance - so let us just hope for success that way.
