President Barack Obama said Monday he would put plans for airstrikes against Syria on hold if Bashar Assad's regime were to turn over control of its chemical weapons.
"Absolutely. If in fact that happens," Obama said in an interview with ABC, one of six he sat for at the White House on Monday.
Obama added, in an interview with NBC, that the proposal is a "potentially positive development."
Though the president initially anticipated broad congressional support for military action, Obama conceded that support for his proposal isn't strong. "I wouldn't say I'm confident" that Congress will authorize action, he told NBC.
