ktc - They were fearful of the evil unionization... still are.. Pointless...

OCLI, where my wife, son, other friends worked, I saw from the upper levels of VPs, HR, other groups.. They spent more time and money acting like the unions as far as providing information, grievance procedures, binders of white papers, then week long seminars on how to avoid unionization... Funny to watch, from the outside, but another reason I declined position offers over the years.. As it turned out, they folded as telecom folded, but with no defined pensions at all for anyone...

What a waste of time & talents...

Weco:

I said times have changed. IBM went about sixty years without a layoff, and was able to fend off unionization by treating their employees decently. I have generations of IBMers in my extended family, and still have business relations with the company. It certainly isn't the All-American company any more. I still have my first IBM uniform from the sixties - black topcoat, black gloves, black soft hat, grey suit, white button-down, conservative tie, calf-length socks, and wingtips. And I was a lab rat, not a salesman or field engineer. Bought it all my first day on the job. It was just like the Army.
