It's not about feeling sorry for IBM retirees. They'll do OK. It's that companies are abandoning pensions, healthcare, other benefits, job security, and full-time employment at an alarming rate.
I've worked everyday of my life since I was 15 (except for a couple of years while I was in college) and am currently working for one of the largest corporations in the world and I'm not going to get a dime's worth of medical benefits when I retire despite having 3 pensions. So exactly why should anyone feel bad about the deal that those IBM retirees are going to get? It's a better than a lot of people are ever going to get, even those who've had a lifetime of full employment.
