The House of Commons has rejected a motion from Prime Minister David Cameron to endorse British participation in military action in Syria, potentially costing the United States a key ally in the effort to punish the Bashar al-Assad regime's reported use of chemical weapons.
"It's clear to me that the British parliament and the British people do not wish to see military action," Cameron said after the vote. "I get that, and I will act accordingly."
