Hi tkc,

I agree whole-heartedly that the food to provide is the reasonably nutritious sort.

One doesn't want to go all food nazi about it. But for sure, not too much sugar, not too much white flour, sensible portions of quality proteins, fruits and vegetables. etc.

Hi Clo, CF. I consider myself a fiscal conservative and social progressive w/i the constraints of a budget. This thing "gets my goat" on so many levels. I been there done that 40 years ago, saw the negative influence on the "free lunchers." Everybody always knew who they were. Generally by high school "Payers" treated them w/ disrespect while "free lunchers" exhibited entitlement. It was sad to witness. What is or should be the goal of school lunch/breakfast? Originally it was to provide a meal to youngsters because so many kids couldn't pass the physical to enlist/be drafted into WWII. Then it became Nixon's "war on hunger." Golly Gee I don't think kids should go hungry. But if the Gov wants to do it, do it right. The dang program isn't funded enough to provide quality, nutritious meals - so lets eliminate a whole bunch of potential funding by giving the meals away - even to the kids of doctors, lawyers, dentists, teachers etc. That's just stupid. To fight hunger we have food stamps, food banks, charities and more. Who the heck feeds these kids during vacations or for supper? A parent can't afford $1.25 a week for school lunch? Then what the heck are they doing w/ their food stamps? The free food from the food bank and soup kitchens.
If you give a hungry person a fish....but if you teach him how to fish..... School meals should teach kids "how to fish." It shouldn't be a model of how to stuff yourself w/ high calory stuff just to appease the agriculure lobby. Take School meals out of the Ag Dept and put it in the Dept of Ed. "Hungry kids can't learn" is true so take it out of politics. Why can we just be pragmatic. Yeah CF, I hate the entire idea of school meals as they are administered and funded. You ought to take an hour and look at the garbage cans after lunch at your nearby public middle or high school. It's such a waste of time and money and is not instructive while it destroys too many kids' character and potential. DoA donated commodities mainly support the dairy industry - gotta love that processed cheese AND chocolate milk. All that powered milk is so useful. Hate it Clo, hate it CF.
