Hi tkc, I did a quick scan and found your district is not alone.
A bunch of schools in Kentucky, & they are hardly 'liberal.'
I do agree with you that schools do NOT serve nutritious appealing meals. They are often tossed, unless its pizza... or something of little value.
And $.25 cents is a fair way to teach kids nothing is for free. That would ease the costs of the program.
And for the record, I am a 'liberal' with common sense/cents ;))
During their regular meeting Tuesday night, the Haralson County Board of Education unanimously approved the application for a federal program that will provide all students in kindergarten through eighth grade with free breakfasts and lunches.
The program, called the Community Eligibility Option, is a federal program that provides free meals to schools that have at least 40 percent of their students qualifying for free or reduced lunches. Haralson County Schools’ student population is nearly 70 percent free or reduced lunch.
The program is being piloted in Georgia, Florida, Maryland and Massachusetts this year, joining several other states that have already been piloting the program. Next year, the program will go into effect nation wide. For any school approved for the program, they will receive federal assistance for four years before being required to re-apply.
