Bim,

Deferred revenue is listed as a liability on the financials under GAAP. The customer paid but IDCC did not recognize this as revenue due to the arbitration. The acctg entry is debit cash/credit Deferred revenue. IDCC's cash increased but they didn't recognize the reveneue yet. I am positive this money will be counted as revenue come the Q3 earnings report. They are checking with PWC to see how to handle the recognition in terms of a one time revenue increase(due to the prior quarters) and also depending on the timing of the award in regards to current qtr revenue vs past revenue.

Bim, i'm reading that press release and I don't get where any confusion is.

If the $52.6 million amount deferred was in question why would they even mention the exact figure in the release? They confirmed that they got the rates per the contract and the $52.6 million was obviously based upon these rates as the mystery customer paid the amounts already. InterDigital is "studying" the awards, with their auditors and NOT their lawyers, because revenue recognition has many layers when there are multiple components or arrangements. It may be as simple as disclosure where to put it above or below the line. Notice how they still have not disclosed the name of this customer even when these are material amounts worthy of disclosure per their own standards ... like Teecee said (and IR likely alluded to) let it play out ... we will know more very soon ... they won another arbitration ... and it all may have something to do with Bill's recent comments of tech deals in the near future with this very same customer.
